  3. Taste and Explore with John Szabo

Master Sommelier John Szabo was the first Canadian to add the “MS” after his name in 2004. He holds the international Wine & Spirits Education Trust Diploma with honours, as well as the Canadian Sommelier Guild diploma. He’s principal critic for WineAlign.com, Canada’s premiere wine resource, and co-host and producer of the podcast Wine Thieves with a global following in the trade. He writes a monthly wine advisory for Canaccord Genuity, a global financial services management company headquartered in Canada, as well as a column for Grapevine Magazine, and contributes to many international trade and consumer publications. He’s currently co-writing on a book on wine chemistry.

  4. What’s on your to go list?

I love travelling and vineyards are often on my to go list. Having taken the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines helped me to appreciate wine from different perspectives. The great thing about this course is that it can be done online or in-class giving me a lot of flexibility in allocating my time to study. Looking forward to signing up for Level 2 (and some travels) in the next couple of months.

  5. The List Goes On

I’m the regional operations manager for the Amphora Group. We are currently expanding our locations to include a retail bottle shop. I find that all information I have learned from all my WSET programs have been very beneficial in multiple ways.

  6. Rich History

Earlier this year I visited the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. While I learnt about the rich history and distilling process of this iconic brand, I also came back from that visit with an intense curiosity to learn more about the world of distilled spirits. When my employer, the LCBO, offered its employees subsidized access to WSET courses a few months ago, I immediately signed up for WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits. My pre-read of the course materials has been highly informative, and I intend to pursue additional WSET certifications over time.

  9. All the Components

I realized there was more that I needed to learn about this craft – and my curiosity about the industry has been growing. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. It was time to act.

  10. Special Offer

I’m taking this course out of self-interest. A huge advantage for this course is the structured tastings led by very knowledgeable instructors, which help students hone their tasting skills beyond what they could achieve through self-study. Wine and food are such a big part of time spent with family and friends and I hope to only improve on that experience by learning more.
